AIRCRAFT INSPECTIONS WITH DRONES

Photographs made by drones to check mistakes and flaws in works

PHANTOM-4 IN THE DARK

Currently, more and more companies make use of drones for aircraft inspections by taking photographs and in order to check for errors and flaws. Drones improve the times of mobile platforms.

These two types of aircraft are antagonistic in airspace but complementary in the terrestrial one. There are already several companies that make use of drones for the inspections of their aircraft as, for instance, Easyjet and Airbus. The latter has demonstrated this task of the use of drones for the external inspection of their aircraft in the last edition of the Farnborough Air Show. It showed how drones can detect external anomalies which are vital for the good operation of the aircraft obtaining an accurate vision of all the angles of the aircraft. Taking a drone course will help you control any anomaly carrying out this type of work.

This fact has undoubtedly been one of the novelties of the Farnborough Aeronautic Show. This is a seven-day commercial show for the aviation field and which is held every two years in Hampshire (England).

It is organized by Farnborough International Limited, belonging to the Society of British Aircraft Constructors (SBAC), which represents all the aerospace British industry. It is a very important event for the aerospace industry, especially to announce new developments, inventions and applications and to make new contacts and sales. Each edition has 1,300 stands and gets about 150,000 professional visitors.

BOEING ON FLY

THANKS TO THE USE OF DRONES, INSPECTIONS take NO LONGER THAN 15 MINUTES

But what these aircraft inspections using drones consist in? The drone is equipped with a high definition camera and it inspects the fuselage following a pre-defined trajectory while it takes photographs. Once the flight is finished, these images are used to create a 3D model with the goal of locating scratches, dents or any other kind of flaws on the Surface in order to repair them before giving it back to the client. A data base is also created and used to improve traceability, prevention and harm reduction in current and future aircraft models.

DJI OVER THE RIVER

Drones have many advantages, including aircraft inspections. A regular aircraft inspection with mobile platforms (as in the case, for instance, of an A330, the one Airbus is making the test son) can take about two hours. If these inspections are made using drones, the task takes no longer than 15 minutes.

According to Nathalie Ducombeau, Airbus quality director, “The use of this new technology offers better working conditions, including more safety, convenience and comfort for quality inspectors”.
