• Aguacate Model Air Show 2023

An essential date for model aircraft lovers

The Aguacate Model Airshow starts its engines again!

After the success of the first edition, the Aguacate Model Airshow 2023 is getting ready to fill the skies of Vélez Málaga again, but not only with model airplanes.

We tend to think of small replicas, but in this festival we will be able to see models of more than three metres flying at 300 km/h.

Without a doubt, this is a spectacular event that you can’t miss. Do you want to know all the details? We tell you all about it!

When and where

The Aguacate Model Airshow will take place on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of April; a weekend in which pilots from all over Spain will gather at the aerodrome of La Axarquía – Leoni Benabu, in Vélez-Málaga, to fly their aircraft.

But don’t think that only the elite of Spanish aeromodelling will be there (as if that wasn’t enough, right?); there will be much more. There will also be pilots from Portugal, France and England.

Of course, as in last year’s edition, the Air Resources Service of the National Police Force will be present, who will be exhibiting the different UAS that their unit has.

In addition, you can’t miss the aerobatic flight teams, such as the Alfa Team or the Amanecer Patrol.

This kind of events are perfect to meet the future promises of aeromodelling, among them Ángel Gómez, current aeromodelling world champion. Last year we were able to chat with him and we recorded an interesting interview that you can see on video (below). This year, he has already confirmed that he will also be present and we are not going to miss it.

Do you still have doubts that you have to go? Below, you can read the chronicle of the Aguacate Model Airshow 2022 to make up your mind.

Summary of the Avocado Model Airshow 2022

This weekend the Aguacate Model Airshow 2022 was held in Vélez Málaga and, of course, we didn’t want to miss it.

And the place chosen was the aerodrome of La Axarquia; perfect location for this type of activity as the participating aircraft, with wingspans greater than 3 meters, need a runway conditioned.

On the big day, Saturday, early in the morning we were already there with our cameras so as not to miss any detail. Our colleagues from One Air Pictures have prepared a video for you to enjoy as much as we did.

The day began with the pilots adjusting their aircraft so that they were ready for the flight phase. The National Police Corps also arrived to set up their aerial display. On Saturday, more than 60 pilots were scheduled to fly, coming from all over Spain and even, some of them, from Portugal and France.

The quality of the participants was exceptional. We could enjoy the flight of amateur and professional pilots, such as Ángel Gómez, Spanish champion in 2021 in the freestyle category; or Raquel Bellot, a professional pilot who travels around the world demonstrating her incredible 3D helicopter flight.

We also have the participation of great aeromodelling teams, such as Patrulla Amanecer or Alfa Team.

Although the basis of the event was aeromodelling, manned aircraft had their place, with displays that left the audience speechless. The first of these was the EC-135 of the National Police Corps, followed by the formation flight of a Decathlon and a Bucker belonging to the Real Aeroclub de Málaga. Finally, a gyroplane was in charge of putting the finishing touch to an exhibition full of adrenaline and emotion.

Another outstanding performance, but in a static way, was that of the Vampir Fliers. This semi-acrobatic flying team, based in Jerez de la Frontera, participates in countless aerial festivals raising funds for Asafilap, the Andalusian Association of Cleft Lips and Palates. On this occasion, they took advantage of the Aguacate Model Air Show 2022 to show us the new aircraft that joins the team: an Allegro 200.

Once the manned aircraft exhibition was over, the model aircraft returned to the sky, with a grid organised so that there were planes flying at all times.

As we mentioned before, the National Police Corps did not want to miss the event and collaborated with the presence of its helicopter and the exhibition of the resources they have to carry out their work: the increasingly necessary drone units. An impressive and very instructive exhibition, which only reaffirms the strong presence that drones already have in our daily lives.

The public attendance was quite large, reaching 1000 people; a very respectable figure considering that it was the first edition of the event.

Undoubtedly, the Aguacate Model Air Show has earned a place in the calendar of the great model aircraft events in Spain. And it has given us a whole weekend full of adrenaline, acrobatics and a lot of passion for aviation.

We do not want to finish this chronicle without congratulating the organiser, Francisco Romero, for the magnificent work done. It is this kind of activities that serve to spread the passion for aeronautical culture to the general public, and we are already counting the days for the 2023 edition!
